This is my assignment for Creative Writing!
So, for Mr. Davidson's class, we were to write our thoughts on the Red Lake shooting as up to date as we know. So, here goes:
At first, I was sympathetic of the person who committed such a crime, assuming that something must have gone terribly wrong in their life, for them to think they needed to take such drastic measures in order to get their point across. But as soon as I heard that he was a Neo-Nazi, I lost nearly all sympathy that I had originally. People used his being a Neo-Nazi in his defense, saying that kids teased him and didn't like him because of that, but I believe that if he's going to practice absolute intolerance of certain people, like Hitler, that there is no way he has the privelege of expecting everyone else to tolerate him. Now, obviously, there were other factors in his life that brought him to this sort of reaction, but I can't help but think that there are always people who have it worse, and who have gone through the things that he's gone through, without taking it out on innocent people.
As far as it happening in Crookston, I'm sure it could. Crookston is filled with people with problems; whom have suffered through awful trials, and sometimes, it just takes something small, like a joke at their expense, or even the echo of no one saying anything at all, to push someone over the edge. I've even heard people saying that if they had a gun, they would have no problem going into school and shooting the people that made fun of them, years ago. I trust that its just talk, knowing them somewhat well, but to even be bold enough to say something like that, puts them closer to being bold enough to do it.
In conclusion, I think that even though there are many things we could do to maybe improve the situation, like just being decent people, you can't stop pubescent kids from acting stupid and saying things that they don't mean, and you can't stop people from holding grudges for years, and you can't stop people from being who they are, or who they've pretended to be, and in the end, its always the shooter who has the decision of whether or not to pull the trigger.
